Reading Nuggets:
From, Raising Kids Who Read, Daniel T. Willingham, PhD.
"Comprehending what we read depends mostly on the our general knowledge about the topic."
"The key to motivation lies in getting kids to read even when they aren't motivated to do so."
Discuss with your child what he is reading about. Talk about the basics of it and the vocabulary of the topic. In addition, support motivation to read by allowing him/her to have say in what he/she is reading. Then, talk with them about what they are reading, just as you would talk about sports, school, friends etc.

Students have taken their SRI tests for Read 180 and I will send home reports at the end of September.
Classroom Expectations
We have been working on choosing our classroom commitments. Students brainstormed and shared what they felt was important for classroom behavior. After brainstorming, we grouped our suggestions and determined we have four important categories for classroom commitments; communication, respect, safety and class work. We then created our classroom commitments. They are:
As a student/teacher I will...
be respectful
be safe
take care of materials
do my best
Data Folders
Students have assembled their data folders. In these folders they will track their SRI score, Read 180 scores and book quizzes. Students will set goals and determine skills that need attention. These folders will be available at Parent/Teacher conferences in October.
